Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when hormones change and fertility ends. Most women in the United States reach menopause around age 50, but changes associated with the transition can happen much earlier.

After menopause, your ovaries stop producing eggs and your fertility ends. You’ve officially gone through menopause when 12 months have passed without a menstrual cycle. Women may go through menopause earlier or suddenly if they have a hysterectomy or have treatment for cancer.

Perimenopause describes the years leading up to menopause in which changes in your hormones cause uncomfortable symptoms that range from mild to debilitating. At Longoria OBGYN, women can find relief from these symptoms and support as they move through this change in fertility.

What symptoms suggest I am in menopause?

As your estrogen levels drop in the years moving closer to menopause, you may experience unpleasant symptoms. Signs that menopause is beginning include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Breast tenderness
  • Irregular periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Incontinence
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Fatigue

These symptoms are a normal part of transitioning through menopause. Some women experience none or just a few and very mildly. Other women find the symptoms unbearable.

What is the treatment for menopause symptoms?

If you’re struggling with menopause symptoms, Dr. Longoria may suggest hormone replacement therapy. Replacement hormones boost your estrogen levels and stabilize your levels so symptoms ease or completely disappear. Hormone therapy can be applied topically, orally, via injection, or as time-released pellets under the skin.

Loss of estrogen can also trigger bone loss and contribute to osteoporosis. Hormone replacement can limit these risks, but Dr. Longoria will likely recommend regular bone density checks to keep track of your levels.

If you suffer urinary incontinence as part of menopause, Dr. Longoria can offer treatments such as lifestyle changes, physical therapy, oral medications, and minimally invasive procedures. He recommends a customized plan that fits your symptoms, incontinence causes, and health.
