Office based obstetrical ultrasound
Pregnancy is an exciting time in every woman’s life. If you recently took a pregnancy test and believe you’ve got a sweet baby on the way, you’re probably wondering how far along you are.
We offer an in-office dating ultrasound to provide you with your first glimpse of your baby and give you an accurate idea of when you’re due. Often times during this ultrasound, depending on how far along you are, you’ll also be able to hear the heartbeat for the first time.
As dating ultrasounds are typically done early on in pregnancy, we usually use a transvaginal ultrasound to give you the best, most accurate picture and diagnostics possible. If, however, Dr. Longoria chooses to do a transabdominal ultrasound, he will have you drink 32 ounces of water to make sure your bladder is full for the visit. This allows for the best imaging possible, particularly early on in pregnancy.
The earlier a dating ultrasound is done, the better. In fact, the further along a woman is in her pregnancy the harder it is to get an accurate age of the baby. This is particularly relevant toward the end of the second trimester and into the third.
When we perform a dating ultrasound within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and compare it to the first day of your last menstrual period, we can have an accuracy within 3-5 days, with the most accurate dating possible between 8 and 11 weeks.
