Pregnancy Q & A

What health concerns can affect my pregnancy?

Most women experience safe, uncomplicated pregnancies. But every pregnancy is different and exceptional pregnancy care discourages issues from arising and, if they should occur, keeps them from escalating. Pregnancy complications may include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Preeclampsia
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Infections
  • Preterm labor
  • Genetic disorders
  • Miscarriage or stillbirth

These pregnancy complications are usually treatable, but early diagnosis is vital. Prenatal care is an essential part of making sure that you and your baby stay healthy.

What is included in prenatal care?

Prenatal care is the health care you receive in the nine months before you give birth. You’ll see Dr. Longoria about once per month in the first trimester, twice per month in the second trimester, and weekly as you near your due date. Women with unique health care needs or high-risk pregnancies may see Dr. Longoria more often.

Prenatal care is customized to your pregnancy, but may include any or all of the following:

  • Pelvic exams
  • Ultrasounds
  • STD tests
  • Blood tests
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Mental health screenings
  • Measurement of your weight and the size of your abdomen

Standard screenings, such as a test for gestational diabetes, are also part of general prenatal care. Dr. Longoria may recommend genetic testing if you're at risk for genetic disorders. If you do elect to undergo these tests, Dr. Longoria lets you know what to expect and how to interpret your results.

What should I expect at prenatal visits?

When you come in for a prenatal visit, you’ll undergo a physical exam and consult with Dr. Longoria. A nurse measures your vitals, such as blood pressure and weight. These visits are the right time to report any new pregnancy symptoms or lifestyle changes.

You’ll also undergo a pelvic exam. This provides helpful information about your baby's development. At some visits throughout your pregnancy, you’ll undergo blood and urine tests, at least two ultrasounds, and maybe more depending on the team’s findings.

Dr. Longoria also helps you develop a birth plan to address such issues as whether a vaginal or C-section birth is best for you.

What care do I receive after giving birth?

Dr. Longoria provides immediate care for you after pregnancy and continues it into your regular gynecological health support. After you give birth, he’ll want to meet with you several times to ensure your body is healing and your baby is thriving. He will discuss issues such as mental health, breastfeeding, and any surgical recovery. These visits include physical exams.
